March 25, 2009 — The Cohasset Triathlon announced today that 10-time Olympic medalist Gary Hall, Jr., one of America's most highly decorated Olympic swimmers, will participate in the national qualifying event.
On June 28th, over 1000 athletes will compete in the sprint triathlon on Sandy Beach in Cohasset, Massachusetts. The 3rd Annual Cohasset Triathlon helps raise valuable money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) to help find a cure for Type 1 diabetes. The Cohasset Triathlon is currently the largest volunteer driven event in the country for JDRF.
In 1999, Hall was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, but overcame the challenge of the disease by winning six additional Olympic medals, three of them gold, at the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games. "I never gave up", Hall submits, "it was a huge challenge learning to live with diabetes but I was determined to compete at the international level again despite the devastating diagnosis". Four years ago, Hall founded the Gary Hall Jr. Foundation for Diabetes with the goal of reaching out to people managing diabetes, raising awareness and funding, and providing critically needed supplies and resources to those who need it most.
Founder and Race Director Bill Burnett said of Hall, "As a former competitive swimmer, I am thrilled to have Gary in Cohasset this summer. I appreciate Gary's overwhelming support, and having him at the race will be very special for everyone involved."
Hall summed it up best, "You don't need to be a triathlete to appreciate what Bill and his team have put together to help find a cure for Type 1 diabetes. It's incredible. I am excited to take part in this wonderful event."
